Hi! Thank you so much for your willingness to do this interview. The purpose of this interview is to understand how gender affects women who have non-traditional careers. Before we get started, could you please tell us your name and age?
Bijou Liu 54
When did you first discover your interest in archery? At what age did you start learning?
When I was in high school, I was not interested in archery either, I just started archery because there was a club at school.
How old were you when you started?
54
Why have you always been interested in archery? What is the appeal of archery to you?
Archery? Why... At first it was just a hobby and fun, and after a year of practice, I went to a tournament and our coach told me I was good enough to keep shooting. He also told me that if I was good at archery I could go to competitions in other counties, so that's how I started to get better and better at competitions and get better than the results. When I got the results, I would keep going and then I would have a big goal.
Is it always your goal to become a national player?
When you got good results, you found out that you could be a national player. Then when you decided to choose a national player, you accidentally won.
After you won, your goal became bigger and bigger, and you hoped to win prizes in international competitions. Of course, you may lose at first, but gradually you will get better and better.
Does being a woman have any positive or negative impact on your work? If so, can you give me some concrete examples? What was the reaction?
The positive impact is that in Taiwan, it is more likely for a girl to be a national player and go to international competitions. It's also easier to win prizes in international competitions, and currently, girls in Taiwan have a higher chance of winning prizes than boys. On the negative side, female athletes who get married and have children are generally forced to retire from sports because they have to take care of their children. This is the biggest difference between male athletes and female athletes. You have to spend time taking care of your children unless you have someone to help you take care of them or your husband is willing to let you go back to the sport.
But realistically, it's almost always retirement.
What advice would you give to a girl who is interested in archery and wants to follow the same path as you?
Being an athlete is very, very hard, no matter what the sport is. If I were a student, I would be able to get good results if I worked hard. But in sports, it's not necessarily the case, the day of the competition, if you accidentally get injured during the competition, then your efforts will be a bit wasted. The competition is one that requires a lot of care to do this one thing to be able to win the prize.
Especially since archery is an outdoor sport, it may be very cold or very hot on the day of the tournament, making your tournament conditions bad.
In your experience, was there a tournament where you performed worse than expected?
Yes, I had one race where I thought I wouldn't do badly, but I didn't get selected as a national player for that race. It was the only time I was not selected as a national player in my election.
Was it because the conditions were bad that day? Or did you not perform as well as the ones you were with?
My performance was different from the one I was with, and my performance that day was worse than I expected. Maybe I wanted to win so badly that I hurt myself. I wanted to get 100 points so much that I focused on the smallest details, which caused me to do badly in the whole competition. Don't make the whole thing worse by caring too much.
From the interview, I learned that being a sports professional, no matter which sport requires tons of effort and practice. While being a woman made the playing field of archery easier, coach mentions the struggles woman athletes have to face after getting married, and the pressure to have children.
